This Disney princess list is more than just a list of the Disney princesses names! It's filled with lots of fun facts about the princesses too. How well do you know your royalty? Keep reading to find out!

As big a fan as I am, sometimes I've had to Google to be sure I've got them all. That's why I finally made my own printable list…now I have it whenever I need it.

In the process, I found out some fun princess trivia too! For example, do you know what famous person Ariel is modeled after? I didn't. So get your list of Disney princesses and find out some cool facts at the same time!

Disney Princess List

How Many Disney Princesses Are There?

The official Disney princess list stands at 12 right now but that list is sure to grow, especially once Raya is announced as the newest Disney princess. Here are all the Disney princess names just for easy reference. You'll also find a free printable with the complete list of Disney princesses at the end of this post.

Unofficial Disney Princesses:

Though they're every bit as popular as the Disney princesses, some might be surprised to learn that Anna and Elsa aren't in the official Disney princess line-up. In the first Frozen movie, Elsa is technically a queen. By the end of Frozen 2, Anna takes over for her sister.

Snow White

Ever wonder who was the first Disney princess?  Snow White is the princess that started it all in 1937! Her movie was the first full length animated feature film from the Walt Disney Company. Based on the German Fairy Tale by The Brothers Grimm, Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs was a huge success and for a short time, held the record as the highest grossing sound film at the time.

Fun Facts About Snow White:

• Snow White was just 14 years old in the movie, making her the youngest Disney princess.
• The original Snow White was drawn by the same artists behind Betty Boop and had pouty red lips and long eyelashes. However, Walt Disney decided that he wanted Snow White to have a more innocent and wholesome look.
• Snow White is the only Disney princess who doesn't speak to her prince.

Cinderella

The next Disney princess film didn't come until 1950 and is based on the French version of the book Cendrillon, written by Charles Perrault.

Fun Facts About Cinderella:

• Cinderella's prince is never actually referred to as Prince Charming in the movie.
• It's said that one of Walt Disney's favorite pieces of animation was when Cinderella's fairy godmother transformed her torn dress into a beautiful white ball gown.
• Cinderella loses a shoe three times in the movie, once when she is delivering breakfast, a second time when she runs from the ball and a third time going down the steps on her wedding day.
• The story of Cinderella takes place over a 24 hour period. She is shown at the start of the day cleaning, going to the ball that night, then trying on the glass slipper the next morning.

Aurora

Next on our Disney princesses list is Sleeping Beauty, also referred to as Aurora and Briar Rose. Released in 1959, this Disney movie was based on another story by Charles Perrault, The Sleeping Beauty.

Fun Facts About Aurora:

• Princess Aurora has only 18 lines of dialogue in the movie, making her the quietest of all the Disney princesses.
• In the movie, Flora and Merryweather disagree over whether Aurura's dress should be pink or blue. This was based on the fact that the filmmakers were having trouble making this same decision.
• Aurora's thin, willowy body shape was based on Audrey Hepburn.
• The fairytale book at the beginning of the movie was an actual handmade book that was restored in 2008 and is occasionally displayed at public events.
  

Ariel

I'm not sure what happened but there was a pretty big gap in the Disney princess lineup after Aurora. Released in 1989, The Little Mermaid marked the beginning of what's known as the Disney Renaissance. Based on Hans Christian Anderson's The Little Mermaid, Disney is now working on a live action adaptation!

Fun Facts About Ariel:

• Disney animators used Alyssa Milano's face as inspiration for drawing Ariel.
• When King Triton arrives at the arena at the beginning of the movie, look closely in the crowd of sea people and you can see Mickey Mouse, Goofy, Donald Duck and Kermit The Frog (the last one is kind of random, right?)
• Shots of Princess Ariel sitting on the rock resemble the famous Little Mermaid statue in Copenhagan, Denmark.
• Ursula's character was based on the famous drag queen Divine.
• Is Prince Eric related to Prince Phillip and Aurora? There is a painting on his dining room wall that bears a remarkable resemblance to the Sleeping Beauty Royalty.

Belle

Belle is my favorite Disney princess and when the movie came out in 1991, I had to see it over and over! Beauty And The Beast is based on the French fairy tale by Jeanne-Marie Laprince de Beaumont (try saying that name fast three times!)

Fun Facts About Belle:

• Belle is the only person in town that wears blue, symbolizing that she's different from the rest of the townspeople.
• The Beast's real name is Adam.
• When Belle and Prince Adam dance at the end of the movie, it's actually animation taken from Sleeping Beauty. Animators were running out of time and just drew over Belle and Prince Adam.
• While Paige O'Hara was auditioning for the role, a piece of hair flew in her face and she pushed it back. The animators decided to include that in the movie.
• Only five minutes of the film have no music at all…could be why this one is my favorite!
• When the Beauty And The Beast production debuted on the Disney Dream in 2017, Paige O'Hara was on board to celebrate! How do I know? I met her (the highlight of all my Disney adventures!). She was just as sweet as you'd expect too!

Jasmine

Aladdin, based on the Arabic folk tale, was released in 1992 and we were introduced to Princess Jasmine.

Fun Fact About Jasmine:

• Jasmine was the first princess played by two actresses, one voiced the character and another was Jasmine's singing voice.
• According to one of the animators, Aladdin was modeled after three well known celebrities. His looks were based on Tom Cruise, his personality was modeled after Michael J. Fox (which I can totally see) and his clothes were inspired by M.C. Hammer.
• There is a big purple feather on Aladdin's turban that falls in his face whenever he tells a lie.
• Originally Aladdin knew from the beginning that Jasmine was a princess. However, the animators changed it because they didn't want it to look like Aladdin fell in love with her because of her wealth.

Pocahontas

In 1995, we had our next Disney princess with the release of the movie Pocahontas.

Fun Fact About Pocahontas: This movie was released on the 400th anniversary of the year Pocahontas was born.

Mulan

Disney's Mulan was released in 1998 and is based on the Chinese legend of Hua Mulan. It was also Disney's first ever DVD in 1999.

Fun Fact About Mulan:

• Mulan was the first Disney princess to not actually be a princess. She wasn't born or married into royalty.
• Mulan was only the second Disney princess (the first being Aurora) to have two living parents. Since then, Rapunzel, Merida and Moana have joined those ranks.
• Mulan is only the second Disney princess to wear pants, the first being Jasmine.
• Mulan also had one actress voice the character and another sing the song.

Tiana

The next Disney princess, Tiana, made her debut in 2009 with The Princess And The Frog. This movie is loosely based on the Brothers Grimm tale The Frog Prince.

Fun Facts About Tiana:

• This was the first Disney movie to feature an African-American princess.
• Tiana is the only princess with dimples.
• At the beginning of the movie, you can spot a Merida doll on Charlotte's shelf.
• One of the floats in the Mardi Gras parade features King Triton from The Little Mermaid.
• Louis the alligator is named after the great jazz musician Louis Armstrong.

Rapunzel

Rapunzel made her debut in 2010 with the movie Tangled. She became such a popular princess that now she even has her own television show.

Fun Facts About Rapunzel:

• Rapunzel has the biggest eyes of all the Disney princesses.
• Rapunzel is barefoot through most of the movie, which is a symbol of innocence. Mandy Moore, who voices Rapunzel, loves to perform barefoot as well.
• Rapunzel is the first Disney princess movie that is computer generated, as opposed to drawn.

Merida

Merida became our next princess when Brave was released in 2012 and is the only one with an accent.

Fun Facts About Merida:

• Merida is the first Disney princess that doesn't sing.
• Merida is the only princess with brothers.
• This is the first Pixar movie set entirely in the past.
• Merida is the only Pixar character that is also a Disney princess.
• Merida is also the first princess to not have a love interest.

Moana

Our most recent princesses is also one of our favorites,. With the release of her movie in 2016, Moana became our next Disney princess.

Fun Facts About Moana:

• There is a Moana 2 coming in the future but the release date has not yet been announced.
• Auli'i Cravolho, the actress who played Moana, celebrated her 16th birthday on the day Moana debuted in theaters.
• While Moana is singing "How Far I'll Go", Pua the pig pops up from under a rug that looks like the magic carpet in Aladdin.
• Moana was the first Disney princess since Mulan to have her name in the title.

Raya

The most recent addition to the Disney princess family is Raya. Her animated film, Raya And The Last Dragon, was released in 2021.

Fun Facts About Raya:

• Raya is Disney's first southeast Asian princess.
• More than 450 artists and crew members from Walt Disney Animation worked remotely to finish this film.
• The scene with the largest number of animated characters takes place underwater and features over 23,836 animated fish.
• Tuk Tuk, a fantasy creature that is half armadillo and half pug, is named for Thailand's popular three wheeled vehicles.

Anna & Elsa

Next on the Disney princess list are unofficial princesses Anna and Elsa from Frozen. It's one of the most popular Disney princess movies of all time and even I caught totally up in the craze and stalked Disney's website for a month trying to get Anna & Elsa costumes. How can you not love this movie when it's got such an awesome soundtrack?! (I dare you to try not to sing along when you hear Let It Go)

Fun Facts About Anna & Elsa:

• Kristen Bell (Anna) and Idina Menzel (Elsa) both auditioned for the role of Rapunzel in Tangled.
• During the song "The First Time In Forever", the gates open and if you look closely, you can catch a glimpse of Rapunzel and Flynn Ryder.
• Say the names Hans, Kristoff, Anna and Sven quickly and it almost sounds like Hans Christian Anderson who wrote The Snow Queen (the original Frozen).
• Olaf's dance with the four seagulls is a tribute to Bert's dance with the penguins in Mary Poppins.

Disney Princess Songs

Each Disney princess sings a song about her innermost hopes and dreams. Howard Ashman, the legendary Disney lyricist, dubbed these the "I Want" songs. The only exception is Merida, who doesn't sing in her movie.

Honorable Mention: Tinkerbell

Tinkerbell first appeared in the 1904 play Peter Pan by J.M. Barrie and made her Disney debut in 1953's Peter Pan. While technically she's a fairy, she's been such a popular character that it only seemed right to give her an honorable mention.

Fun Fact About Tinkerbell: Tinkerbell got her own star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame in 2010. Even more fun is the rumor that a live action film (Tink) is on the way, starring none other than Reese Witherspoon.

Clearly 16 seems to be the most common age for a Disney princess.

What makes a Disney princess a princess?

This isn't officially from Disney, and doesn't apply to every princess universally, but here's what I've observed…

Disney princesses are almost always royalty by way of birth or marriage. This includes being the daughter of a chief. The one exception is Mulan.

If you're a Disney princess, you're very likely to have an animal sidekick and may even have the ability to communicate with animals. Disney princesses are also known to have beautiful singing voices (with the exception of Merida) and are kind and gentle.

The princesses have changed over the years though. While earlier princesses often relied on princes to save the day, modern day princesses are more likely to take matters into their own hands.
